General Election 2015: Security tight at Foyle count centre but no bombshells expected

Security is tight outside the Foyle and East Londonderry count centre at Templemore with police checkpoints and a cordon sanitaire preventing free access five years after dissident republicans forced a taxi driver to take a pipe bomb to the venue in 2010.

The then Sentinel editor’s car was damaged in the controlled explosion in the car park outside the Complex that time around and the count centre moved to the Waterside for the 2011 Assembly elections.

It returned to Templemore last year for the local elections.

Helicopters were up over the North and West of Londonderry as polling drew to a close.

But no bombshells are expected in either constituency electorally, except perhaps amongst the Sinn Féin camp who believe Gearóid Ó hEára can cause a shock upset and unseat Mark Durkan of the SDLP.

In East Londonderry Gregory Campbell of the DUP is safer than Mark Durkan in Foyle.

But a possible three-way tussle for a consolation second spot between William McCandless of the UUP, Gerry Mullan of the SDLP and Caoimhe Archibald of Sinn Féin will boost the morale of the winner and provide a diversion for onlookers.
