Generosity of Ballymoney folk raises half a million!

The Ballymoney committee of Cancer Research UK has half a million reasons to be proud of themselves for the local fundraisers raised over £41,000 last year bring their overall total to a staggering £500,000.

The renowned generosity of the residents of Ballymoney was reaffirmed last Tuesday when a cheque for £41,500 was presented by local fundraisers to Cancer Research UK.

The magnificent sum was raised through donations from people throughout the borough over the past year and a substantial cheque was handed over on their behalf by the Ballymoney committee of the charity at its Annual Supporters Meeting.

As well as the presentation those present were given talks by representatives of the charity who outlined where the money would be spent as well as the advancements being made in terms of detection and treatment. Guest Speaker was Philip Burn a PHD Research Student at Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology Belfast. Also present was Margaret Carr, Research Engagement Manager, who also paid tribute to the fundraising activities.

Also in attendance was Ryan McClintock, Regional Fundraising Manager for Cancer Research UK, who said, “It is my pleasure to be here tonight at the AGM of Ballymoney Local Committee of Cancer Research UK. I have attended many of these meetings and I have never seen so many people from the local community attend – I think this is indicative of the strong community spirit imbued in the people of Ballymoney.

“After another fantastic year of fundraising, I am humbled to receive this cheque for £41,500 which includes an anonymous donation of £10,000 which was made with the specific request that the money goes through the local Cancer Research UK group for all their hard work and dedication.

“Moreover, this amount has now meant that the group has smashed the £500,000 barrier.”

Mervyn Ferris, Chairman of the Committee, said the traditional supporters’ meeting is an opportunity to thank everyone who has given their support throughout the year and to hear something of how their contributions are being used and the progress being made towards their vision of beating cancer.

“The Committee see their role as organising and encouraging local people to get involved in fundraising activities and through their efforts they are playing an important role in the fight to beat cancer,” said Mervyn.

He then paid tribute to the hard work and support given by the core committee of Dorothy, June, Eddie, Ivor and Debbie, the team of collectors and all those present who have supported this year’s fundraising.
