'George should stand aside'

FROM:- Doing The Right Thing (name and address supplied).

Now that the UUP has carried out the first stage of its selection process for the next Assembly election, it should be very clear to all that since he only finished in fifth place, George Savage now has no prospect of contesting the election itself.

While this is a personal reverse for George the fact is that progress is inevitable and no-one can hold back the sands of time.

George has been a very good servant of the UUP for many years, but his day is now all but over. There is, however, one final service he could do for the party that put him where he is today.

George could and should come to a decision, for the good of the UUP, that he will not see out the remainder of his term at the Assembly, but that instead, he will step aside and allow the party to make use of the co-option provisions in order to co-opt Colin McCusker onto the Assembly now, ahead of the election so that he can gain valuable experience in the coming months.

I know that this would be a painful decision for George. But it is the bigger thing and right thing to do and I would ask him to do so in the interests of the Party.
