Gerry’s departure creates an unfillable gap: Mayor

She said: “I was deeply saddened this morning (Thursday, August 21) to hear the news that one of Derry’s most renowned broadcasters and best loved personalities, Gerry Anderson, has passed away.

“His irreverent humour and acerbic wit on air made him a favourite in every household and his unique brand of comedy spanned the generations.

“Gerry brought laughter to his beloved ‘Stroke City’ in even the darkest days and he will leave an unfillable gap in both broadcasting and our community as a whole.

“I offer my condolences to his wife Christine, his family, his many friends and of course to his close associates at Radio Foyle who will be grieving the loss of a great man today.”

Gerry Anderson entertained audiences for over 30 years, becoming a household name thanks to his unique ability to charm and provoke the many local characters and callers he regularly engaged with on his show. Co-presenter Seán Coyle was the perfect partner for Gerry, and the pair had a rapport shared only by the very best comedy duos.

The many awards Gerry picked up over the years were a testament to his true professionalism amidst the fun, and he will be sadly missed by thousands of fans across the country and colleagues in the media industry.
