Get onboard the Big Bus

COMEDIENNE and playwright Nuala McKeever, patron of the Action Cancer Big Bus, gets into character to encourage local groups and businesses in Londonderry to book the mobile unit for visits to their communities, workplaces and health-related events.

The same picture is featured in a provincewide bus shelter poster campaign this month on Adshel poster sites.

The Big Bus, sponsored by retailer SuperValu, houses cancer prevention and early detection services and staff on the unit also provide information about support services for people affected by cancer. The unit is the only one of its kind in Europe and is on the road throughout the year.

Services provided on the Big Bus include digital breast screening for women aged between 40 and 49 and over 70, health promotion and MOT health checks for men and women. A weightloss clinic provides clients with a full body composition analysis and offers tailored guidance on reaching and maintaining an ideal weight.

Independent retail group SuperValu and Action Cancer have worked together in support of the charity’s mobile cancer services since 2001 and in 2006 SuperValu helped Action Cancer pay for and launch the state-of-the-art Big Bus screening and health promotion unit. SuperValu stores have raised over 800,000 for the Big Bus since it was launched.

The Big Bus visits community groups, women’s groups, public sector organisations and companies of all sizes. For more information about the Big Bus, or to make a booking contact Action Cancer on 02890803344 or [email protected]
