Get ready for some ‘Thrills on the Hills’

THE countdown is on following the official launch Cookstown District Council’s flagship Festival ‘Thrills on the Hills’ took place on Monday.

The three day festival which is run and organised by three local groups in Pomeroy, Pomeroy Players drama group, Pomeroy branch of Comhaltas and Pomeroy Plunketts GAA club will take place in 3 weeks, beginning on the 23rd of August and finishing on the 25th.

The group have secured great acts and have included wonderful family activities.

Friday night kick starts the festival at St. Mary’s hall with the cream of Irish Traditional Music featuring Ciara Fox and her band and then then headliners “The Haydens and Friends” with world famous musicians Cáthal and Stephen Hayden. The concert starts at 9pm and there will be a few surprise performers on the night.

On Saturday afternoon starting from the Rowantree Centre there will be a Charity Cycle in aid of Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. In recent weeks a local Pomeroy family were able to avail of the expertise of the Hospital so we would welcome as many cyclists as possible to come and support a very worthy cause. There will be 2 routes, a 25 mile flat challenge and a family cycle based in and around Pomeroy Forest. This cycle will be designed for children of all ages and is themed on the Alice in Wonderland Story, so there will be a few delightful surprises for children as they make their way around the track.

On Saturday night at 10 pm we have a very special treat as the Queen of Country music, the one and only Philomena Begley makes her home coming debut to where it all started 50 years ago in Begley’s Hall (St. Mary’s Hall) Pomeroy. Philomena will be accompanied by her son Aidy Quinn and their big band for a night of Jiving, Waltzing, Craic and Banter.

On Sunday we have the return of Irelands longest Soapbox Race, 1 KM of “death defying” gravity racing featuring 90 degree bends and speeds up 40 mph. This is Irelands premier Soapbox race featuring carts from all over Ireland and the UK. Entries will be excepted on the day, scrutiny begins at noon and racing commences at 2pm. We have street entertainment for the children with face painting and balloon artists. We will also have cage soccer in the Diamond and we will be showing the Tyrone V Mayo game live on our big screen, so if your not going to Croke Park you can catch all the action in Pomeroy where there will be a great atmosphere and plenty of food and drink. The semi finals and final of the Soap Box race will be after the match at approx 5pm.

On Sunday evening we have the return of Big Bingo to St Mary’s hall with an estimated Jack Pot of £1000, so someone’s going to go home rich, rich, rich. The weekend will be great fun and everyone is very welcome.

A weekend ticket for entertainment on Friday and Saturday night is at a recession busting price of only £10, where would you get value like that.
