Get your dog licence

CRAIGAVON Borough Council is urging all dog owners throughout the Borough to licence their dog to ensure they stay on the right side of the law and out of the dog house!

The main benefit or securing a dog licence is the knowledge that if your dog strays and is picked up by the dog warden, they can return your pet to you quickly by checking the dog’s identification tag which will match the details on your licence.

It is also a legal requirement that anyone in possession of a dog across the Borough must hold a licence - If you ignore the law you may be fined and possibly prosecuted.

Dog licensing helps tackle the growing problem of strays, dog fouling and possible attacks on people and other pets.

The Council's Dog Warden collects an average of 900 unwanted and stray dogs every year which are taken to Council kennels where they are kept for a minimum of six days, giving the owners an opportunity to claim their much loved pets. If the dogs are not claimed Council will try to find another home for the animal.

Jayne Currie, Craigavon Borough Council’s Assistant Licensing Officer said: “A dog licence benefits both dog owners and their beloved pets as if the dog gets lost the licence is key to finding and tracking its home. I would urge all dog owners to obtain a licence or renew their old licence to ensure they stay on the right side of the law and for peace of mind.”

A dog licence will cost 5 per year, however, this is due to increase soon so get your licence now to avoid the price hike. Once you obtain your licence, your dog must wear a collar and also the coloured licence identification tag which will be issued to you upon licensing.
