SDLP councillor Roisin Loftus is backing the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s investigation into the need for social housing in Kilrea and Moneydig.

The month long exercise is designed to establish if there are people in these communities who would be interested in social housing if it was available. The investigation is also assessing the demand for the co-ownership scheme which allows people to part buy/part rent their homes.

She said: “Social housing is critical to the needs of people depending on rented accommodation and with the housing stock of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive largely sold off it is essential that new houses are built to replace those.

2To ensure that houses are built where they are needed it is important that people contact the Northern Ireland Housing Executive on 028 90318563 by March 5.

“Many people who cannot afford to buy their home at the moment but would like to become owner-occupiers in the future should seriously look at the option of part rent, part own. Commonly referred to as co-ownership, this scheme allows people to buy their own homes by progression as their income improves.

“It has been highly successful and has allowed many people to eventually buy their own homes. Again I can put people in touch with the relevant body responsible for co-ownership.”
