Getting help at Gordon's

TRACEY Scott is the pharmacy manager at Gordon's Chemist, which runs a 12-week smoking cessation scheme.

The scheme, which is open to the public, involves an initial consultation with Tracey.

“We have a quick chat to determine which products would be suited best,” she explained.

“The heavier the smoker the longer acting the product I would recommend. For the heaviest smoker there’s 24-hour patches to supply a steady stream of nicotine into the bloodstream. For someone who only smokes six a day there’s gum or lozenges that can be taken as and when they need it.”

Another product on the market is the inhalator, which Tracey said was very good for replicating the “hand to mouth” action of smoking.

Those who sign up to the scheme come in on a weekly basis and discuss their progress. There’s also an annual check-up to ensure quitters have kept up their good work.

But you don’t have to sign up for the 12-week programme to avail of the products available, as Tracey explained.

“You can just buy the products off the shelf or you can get discounts for enrolling in the scheme. The products are also available on prescription. Staff are also able to give advice to customers without them having to sign up for the scheme.”

She added: “The scheme has been going on for a number of years and evidence shows it’s very successful.

People find it very user friendly. They can come in and see us whenever it suits.”
