Giant visitor helps Glengormley pupils get fit

GLENGORMLEY Integrated Primary School was visited by Colin Shields, captain of the LBM Belfast Giants ice hockey team, recently as part of the Tesco 'Get Fit' Programme.

Tesco believe that every child should have the opportunity to participate in all kinds of fun activities and try many different sports. As part of their ongoing commitment to get the children of Northern Ireland active, Tesco have sponsored the ‘Get Fit’ Programme with the Belfast Giants.

The joint aim is simple, the Giants and Tesco want children to make exercise part of their normal daily routine. They have chosen to teach the basics of ice hockey because it is a relatively new game to this country and something that everyone can try out and have fun learning a new sport.

Colin Shields believes Tesco and the Giants are definitely on the right track with this initiative.

“An active lifestyle is so important for kids these days,” he said. “Tesco have made this programme possible with their generous support and this season we hope to visit over 40 schools as part of the Get Fit initiative.”

By the year 2010, it is projected that one in five boys and one in four girls in Northern Ireland will be obese. The programme was developed by the Giants to help combat child obesity and increase children’s interest in sport and exercise.
