Gilford scoops £23.5k for community projects

Gilford is to get a grant of £23,500 from the Department of Social Development ‘Areas at Risk’ fund, it has been revealed.

The monies are to be divided between a mural project and shop front scheme in the village.

Local MLA Sydney Anderson Anderson described it as a ‘positive’ development. The monies were approved under the Gilford Areas at Risk programme and will be administered in conjunction with the Gilford Community Forum, an umbrella organisation for all the various community groups.

It will be used to buy small items such as computers and stationery to help the community forum deliver its programme.

The cash will also be used for a mural project in Bridge Street/Stramore Road - the brainchild of Gilford Concerned Residents Group.

Chairman of that group Mr Timothy Mayes welcomed the news: “This funding will be put to good use in the community and local residents will be pleased to see improvements in the village being carried out as a result of this funding. Whilst some of the funding will be used for a mural project I also welcome the fact that some of the money will be used to carry out a shop front scheme at two premises. There are a number of vacant properties and through this programme it is proposed that these properties be painted, the windows be boarded up and that vinyl images be installed on the boards. This funding was of great benefit in the past and hopefully it will keep Gilford moving forward.”
