Ricky O’Connor, who describes himself as being a smoker who drinks two litres of Coke a day, came up with the idea while chatting to neighbours Eugene Dallat and Chris Milligan.

“I have known John Adams for a long time and when I heard about the Gillian Adams Angel Foundation being set up in memory of John’s wife Gillian, I thought we have to do something.

“We also said that it had to be something that people would think we wouldn’t be able to do so we decided to cycle to Belfast!”

So Ricky, who works for Good Food and Wine Company in Ballymoney organised a cycle to the firm’s foodhall in Belfast’s Queen’s Arcade.

“The first night we went out training, I couldn’t even do a mile, I thought I was going to have a heart attack!” joked Ricky.

The group persevered and eventually set off on the trek to Belfast.

“Mosside to Templepatrick was pretty easy but the pull from there to Belfast, I was getting it tight but the thought of people lying in the City Hospital or RVH kept us going.

“When we got to Belfast we got a picture taken at the City Hall to prove we actually made it. We hope to have raised about £1,000 for the Foundation.”

The cycling team was Jason McKeeman, Johnny McCurdy, Ricky O’Connor, Nigel Dunn, Paul Dunn, Eugene Dallat and Chris Milligan.
