Giro d’Italia victory for Cairncastle PS cyclists

The Giro Challenge, which ran between March 31 and April 11, is an inter-school competition run by charity Sustrans which called on pupils to take part in a race of their own by cycling, walking and scooting to school.

Pupils from Cairncastle Primary School competed against other schools across Northern Ireland to race around a virtual route of the Giro d’Italia.

Cairncastle Primary came second in their category by cycling and scooting 874 journeys to school during the 10-day competition. They won a “Dr Bike” session.

One Cairncastle teacher said: “The pupils were really excited about the arrival of the Giro D’Italia in May, and this competition was a really fantastic way for them to get involved too.

“We were thrilled when the real event passed through Ballygally and Larne, but also hope that the children will continue cycling, scooting and walking to school long after the Giro leaves Northern Ireland.”

Steven Patterson, deputy director at Sustrans said: “Congratulations to Cairncastle Primary School children.”

He added: “The Giro is one of the most exciting sporting events in the world, and we hope that the legacy of this event will encourage more children in Northern Ireland to cycle.”
