At 8.30am immediately after the safety brief, thirty six hardy souls left Rockmount Golf Club for Newcastle.

The array of cycles and their brightly dressed riders, will definitely not be seen at the forthcoming Giro d’Italia. Included were some high class carbon fibre road cycles along with some more traditional cycles, and even one of those had dynamos fitted to the front and rear wheels.

For the young and those unfamiliar with dynamos on cycles; the dynamos were fitted to cycles in bygone years to power the front and rear lights; that is before LED lights!

The group initially headed towards Carryduff before joining the main Ballynahinch Road to head towards Newcastle.

The athletes in the group started to stretch their legs and powered ahead leaving the more mature members to continue at a more leisurely pace.

Whilst no one was racing a certain father and son completed the cycle with the elder finishing in Newcastle a few minutes ahead of the younger; never to be mentioned again. All arrived in Newcastle safely with only one member having any mechanical problems en-route, stopping four times to complete repairs.

The Gents Captain Paul Banford and Lady Captain Janet Douds were on hand in Newcastle to welcome everyone along with Lady Vice Captain Margaret Harrison and the Ladies secretary Anne McShane to hand out refreshments.

Thanks are extended to Dr Richard Harrison who was on hand to provide medical assistance; Barry Dunlop (Dunlop Agencies) for providing transportation home, Henry Moore the mobile mechanic, Stuart Rossi the water carrier, Dougie Fairweather the photographer and all those that assisted Ed in the organisation of the event including his wife Jo and his sister. All monies will be collected as soon as possible and a final figure will be published in due course; but on a very rough count on Sunday evening over £2000 has been raised.
