Given ‘chance after chance’

Nineteen-year-old Daire McIlroy, whose address was given as Glenravel Drive, Lurgan, admitted a series of offences.

Three month terms were imposed on offences of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent on March 31, another taking without consent, theft of a grinder from Lurgan Golf Club and damaging a telehandler on March 27.

He was given concurrent three month sentences for taking a vehicle without consent and not having insurance at Glenravel Drive on August 13.

McIlroy was also fined £25 for not having a licence.

A further three month term of custody was imposed for driving a scrambler without insurance on June 13 with £25 fines for no licence, not wearing a helmet and carrying a pillion passenger.

For driving a motorcycle without insurance on March 7 he was jailed for three months and three months were imposed for taking without the consent of the owner.

He was fined £25 for not having a licence and not wearing a helmet.

McIlroy had received a community service order for 120 hours for disorderly behaviour and this was breached.

In its place he received a concurrent three month sentence.

A two month suspended sentenced was also invoked and this is to run consecutively making a total of seven months in custody.

District Judge, Mrs Bernie Kelly, said that McIlroy was beyond the point of a last chance and described what he had done as a ‘complete spree’.

She told the defendant: “While I appreciate you may have your own difficulties it does not give you carte blanche to do want you 
want.

“You have been given chance after chance.

“It just has to stop.”
