“Glaringly obvious” Coolessan problems

DEPUTY Mayor and DUP Councillor Alan Robinson has called for greater parking provision for pensioners within the Coolessan area.

Speaking this week, he said: “Whilst out and about we are conscious of possible roads, housing or environmental improvements that may be helpful to that locality and therefore act upon its needs were we would proceed to put forward relevant proposals to the various agencies.

“On a recent visit to the Coolessan area of Limavady it was glaringly obvious that there are no parking facilities at the pensioner’s bungalows.

“There is also no direct roadway access for emergency vehicles to service the front of those properties. In the past residents who wanted to park close to and in clear view of their homes had to mount kerbing on the nearby Ballyquin Road and drive along a two metre wide stretch of footpath to gain access however Roads Service installed bollards to protect their footpath and to prevent damage.

“Unfortunately the lack of parking in that area is a historical problem whereby the original design of this site failed to cater for some residents requiring parking directly in front of or in close proximity to their homes. There are other Housing Executive sites within the town that have similar issues where we also have endeavoured to find solutions to.

“Three years ago we had lobbied both Roads Service and Housing Executive on this matter having been contacted by local residents.

“We were informed that engineers would review the parking arrangements however unfortunately we have had no further update and no progress. We thought that it would be timely to relook at this and therefore we have now written to the Housing Executive asking that this matter be revisited and if their engineers would be prepared to attend a site meeting to discuss the possibility of additional parking close to the local shop to service nearby residents.

“Obviously a full neighbourhood consultation would be required to determine the views of other residents and we would be conscious of any objections put forward. In the meantime we look forward to discussing the plans Housing Executive have for this land.”
