The scheme was passed by the council’s planning committee on April 7, after being recommended for approval by planners.

However, an objector subsequently wrote to the DOE requesting that the application be called in, meaning that the application would be determined by the department rather than the council.

A report due to come before the council’s Community Planning committee on May 12, states that the Minister “has advised council that he will not be calling the application in and no longer wishes to restrict the grant of planning permission”.

It adds that the department’s recommendation to approve the proposal “remains unchanged”.

Council must now hold a mandatory pre-application hearing prior to issuing a decision on the application.

The department has also advised council of its notice of opinion to grant conservation area consent for the proposed demolition within Eglinton Yard.

Funding for the scheme has yet to be identified.
