Glenavy girl takes on another charity challenge

A GLENAVY student who likes to push herself to the limit to raise money for charity is set to take on her biggest challenge to date.

Naomi McReynolds, 21, who studies physics at St Andrews University plans to drive 10,000 miles across Europe into Russia and through Kazakhstan in order to donate three much needed vehicles to the aid organisation Go Help, based in Mongolia.

She intends to do this with 11 other students. The project has been organised by the student society St Andrews Adventure Group (STAAG), which is working in conjunction with the University of St Andrews Charities Campaign.

Naomi explained: "Challenge 2011: St Andrews to Mongolia, has carefully put together a team from over 100 applications, and registered three vehicles for the Mongolia Charity Rally 2011.

The premise of the expedition is to drive, unassisted, from St Andrews to Mongolia where we will be met by Go Help, who allocate the vehicles to worthy projects and charities where they fill a much needed role. This expedition requires extensive preparation and a great fundraising effort."

Naomi who in the summer of 2009 climbed to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania and last summer climbed to the base camp of Anna Purna, Nepal has raised almost 6000 for Childreach International to date. Only last weekend Naomi attempted to canoe across Scotland for Unicef and Go Help, although the bad weather forced her to cut the trip short. She hopes that in this latest challenge she will be able to raise awareness of the difficulties in Mongolia and is hoping local people will help sponsor her fund raising efforts.
