Glenavy residents tell Roads Service - ‘our safety matters’

The recent tragedy in Cloughmills has prompted Glenavy residents to demand road safety measures be implemented in the area.

On Saturday (November 15) the local community held a campaign to highlight the ongoing issues in the village and they are sending out a clear message to the Department of Regional Development - our safety matters.

They are urging people to sign a petition which was officially launched last weekend, urging the Department of Regional Development to install a footpath on the Glen Road, which leads to the primary school, GAA pitch, St Joseph’s Chapel and the local boxing club.

Campaigners are also requesting that a zebra crossing be placed in the main street and for speed calming measures to be implemented on the Belfast Road.

Campaigner and local representative Mary Kate Quinn explained: “What happened in Cloughmills was heart-breaking and the thoughts of this community are with the family of Adam Gilmour.

“That tragic accident has underlined how important it is that we have the road safety issues in Glenavy are dealt with as soon as possible so that we don’t have something similar happening here. “The Department of Regional Development has said in the past that they do not have the funds to put a footpath in place but we cannot put a price on a child’s life. We will be highlighting this matter until safety measures are put in place. As a community we stand together on this issue.”
