Glengormley Library to host Battle of Jutland presentation

The event to mark the Decade of Centenaries will be led by Philip Orr. It will run between 10.30am and 11.30am.

The event, which will appeal to historians and members of the public is one of a series of illustrated presentations organised by Libraries NI on the Battle of Jutland.

The Battle of Jutland took place between the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas Fleet on May 31 1916 in the North Sea, off the mainland of Denmark. Although it was the only major naval battle of World War I, it became the largest sea battle in naval warfare history in terms of the numbers of battleships and battlecruisers engaged, bringing together the two most powerful naval forces in existence at that time.

Philip Orr is a playwright, war historian and author of a number of books and dramas that deal with aspects of Irish history, especially the Irish experience of World War One and the politics and culture of radical Protestants in the 18th century.

He has been involved recently in projects focusing on history and identity, mostly but not solely, with Northern Ireland’s loyalist community.

Meanwhile, the only afloat survivor of the Battle of Jutland, HMS Caroline will be officially opened at the end of May in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter as a heritage visitor attraction.
