Glengormley school new build project moves a step closer

The 160-pupil Irish medium primary school on the Hightown Road is one of 10 schools set to benefit from new build projects approved by the Minister on Tuesday, March 15.

Mr O’Dowd confirmed to the Northern Ireland Assembly that the 10 projects, which will have a total capital value of around £40million, will be ‘advanced in planning’. However, he cautioned that the developments may not be completed for several years, depending on the availability of funding.

“This announcement today is not only good news for those schools to be advanced in planning, but it is also good news for the economy. It represents in the order of £40m of capital investment and will be a welcome boost to the construction industry over the coming years as the projects come to fruition,” he said.

“While this will be welcome news for these schools, there will be others that will be disappointed not to be announced today. I can reassure those schools that not being part of this list will not impact their chances of being selected as part of a future call.”

The Minister confirmed that due to issues such as technical feasibility studies, business cases, procurement and design processes, significant construction spend is unlikely before 2018/19.
