Gleno lighting

DRD Roads Service began work on Friday to replace stolen cabling and reinstate street lighting between Glenfall Cottages and Gleno Dairy.

Assembly member Roy Beggs Jnr had contacted the street lighting section of Roads Service about the matter after copper thieves struck.

“It is highly regrettable that the lights at Gleno have been out for almost six weeks, but the reason is that thieves ripped out the copper cabling linking the street lights, and this has all got to be replaced.

“I have been assured that anti tamper measures will be put in to deter further such incidents. Pensioners and others have been inconvenienced by these thieves. I would urge people to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities around street lighting columns or electricity sub stations.

“This reinforces the need in my opinion to tighten up on the regulations around scrap metal dealing,” said Mr Beggs.

I have raised this matter at Stormont and repeat my view that all dealings in scrap metal should be cashless to make the tracing and of stolen valuable metals easier.”
