Gleno residents put brakes on speeders

The readings, detected on the Ballywillan Road, were followed by the revelation that traffic is speeding through the village at an average of 47mph despite the 30mph limit.

MP for East Antrim Sammy Wilson, along with MLA David Hilditch and Councillors Gregg McKeen and Paul Reid, met with Gleno residents and a Roads Service official to discuss how to reduce traffic speeds. A DUP spokesperson commented: “It is a shame that this picturesque village which is expanding and has many young families living in it, is being treated as a race track by irresponsible drivers.”

The village experiences high traffic volumes with people travelling to and from work in Larne and Carrickfergus. Villagers now fear potential fatalities.

Police have been asked to give more attention to the area and drivers are being urged to moderate their speed. Roads service will highlight speed limits more prominently in the village and at its entrances. There are dangerous junctions hidden by poor sight lines or the road layout, and action will be taken to warn drivers. It is hoped that work will start after the holidays. Roads Service has also been asked to consider a footpath along the Ballywillan Road.
