GO AHEAD FOR SUBSTATION?

Plans for a new wind farm cluster substation on the outskirts of Rasharkin are expected to get the thumbs up from Ballymoney Borough Council when it meets this week.

It is believed the controversial proposal, which was previously deferred by councillors despite the Planning Service’s approval, will finally be given the green light following an ‘agreement’ from objectors. The agenda item has been tabled by Cllr Cathal McLaughlin for this Wednesday’s Planning Service meeting at Riada House.

It states: ‘D/2012/0276/F - approximately 300m west of no. 269 Finvoy Road, Rasharkin BT44 8SD - construction of a new 110 and 33kv substation, associated access road and 110kv and 33kv overhead lines. With reference to the planning application above, Cllr McLaughlin has advised that an agreement has been reached between the constituent he has been supporting and a third party, regarding the future of the flying club in Rasharkin. This can give the planners the go ahead to grant permission for the project to go ahead.’

The plans by NIE have been fiercely objected to following concerns over its location and the lack of an Environmental Impact report. Objectors have raised issues regarding health and safety, visibility, property prices as well as concerns over the future of the local model aircraft flying club.
