Go ahead given for next phase of Wallace Park improvement

THE second phase of the Wallace Park improvement scheme has been given the green light.

The Planning Service has given the go-ahead for the project, which will see major improvements in the park, including a new changing pavilion and an extension to the car park.

The project will now be put out to tender and the council has indicated that they hope work can begin in late summer/early autumn.

The plan for this phase of the park also includes improvement work to the paths and railings, as well as to areas that have become water logged.

Drainage will be added and the council also plans to repair the duck pond and install lighting in the main avenue.

This second phase of the scheme follows on from improvements made to the park's play area, which are expected to be completed by the end of June.

Speaking at this week's meeting of Lisburn City Council's Planning Committee, at which permission for the work was granted, Councillor Jonathan Craig welcomed the scheme.

"Five years ago when I was Mayor I forged this issue through after twenty years of neglect," said Mr Craig. "These improvements will all add to the new play park. I only hope there are less difficulties with this application than the last one."

Councillor Thomas Beckett also welcomed the approval, saying: "These improvements are much needed."

Councillor Paul Givan added: "This was one of the early issues I was engaged in when I was first elected and now we are seeing the work coming to fruition. This is good news."
