Gobbins cliff edge rescue

A woman who was trapped on a County Antrim cliff edge has been rescued by Coastguard and Royal Navy search teams.

After six decades of closure and a £7.5 million investment, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council today (Wednesday 19th August 2015) reopened The Gobbins to the public, giving eager thrill-seekers the chance to uncover the once hidden wonder of the Antrim coast and indulge in an exhilarating cliff path walk. 

The re-imagined cliff path will draw in thousands of visitors each year from across the globe as well as re-establishing itself as the iconic Northern Ireland attraction it once was.

It happened at the Gobbins coastal path in Islandmagee at about 20:30 GMT on Tuesday.

She was winched to safety by the Royal Naval Search and Rescue helicopter from Prestwick. Larne lifeboat and Bangor inshore lifeboat also assisted.

She was taken to hospital in Belfast for treatment but her condition is not yet known.
