Golden celebration time for the ladies of Ravarnette WI

It was a special weekend of events recently for the ladies of Ravarnette WI who celebrated their 50th anniversary.

The group formed back in 1965, the same year the war in Vietnam was escalating, the space race was in full swing, Malcolm X was assassinated and Muhammad Ali defeated Sonny Liston.

An Anniversary dinner kicked off the events at Lisburn Golf Club on the Friday, November 15.

Ann McCurdy, Executive Member, presented members with an anniversary gift of an engraved Gavel and Board.

On Saturday, November 14 the members were treated to a private tour around Hillsborough Castle followed by Afternoon Tea in the Throne Room.

There was a Special 50th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service held on Sunday, November 15 for the ladies at Eglantine Parish Church.

President, Maureen Campbell welcomed special guests, Ravarnette members, members from neighbouring Institutes and friends, to the service conducted by Rev. JW Kernoghan, Rector of All Saints, Eglantine. The Parish Choir led the Praise.

Elizabeth Warden, Federation Chairman brought greetings and congratulations from the Federation of Woman’s Institutes in Northern Ireland.

Heather Barclay and Beth Dunlop gave Scripture Readings. The Guest Speaker was Lady Christine Eames who enthralled the congregation with an interesting and inspiring address of her involvement with the WI. The offering was in aid of the Dr John Hinds Air Ambulance Charity Appeal. Marie Gamble, Vice President Ravarnette WI offered prayers and Kathleen Cantley, Secretary, delivered the vote of thanks.

Following the service, afternoon tea was served. Everyone then watched a special film show depicting the history of Ravarnette WI since its formation on November 9 1965 which evoked many fond memories. The afternoon concluded with the singing of A Countrywoman’s Song.
