Golfer Alan tees off MarieCurie abseiling fundraiser

PROFESSIONAL golfer, Alan Dunbar, traded his golf-club for a harness to help launch this year’s Ramore Head Abseil Challenge along with Barbara Dempsey, Chair of the Marie Curie Coleraine Fundraising Group.

Marie Curie Cancer Care’s Ramore Head Abseil is on for the second year running, and has high hopes of being even more successful than last year already attracting over 45 sign ups.

This year’s fun event wil take place on Saturday, Seotember 21.

Over 80 participants took part last year raising over £11,500 which equates to 575 hours of nursing care free to terminally ill patients and their families locally.

Alan and Barbara would like to encourage as many as possible to consider doing this very daring abseil.

With breathtaking views across the North Atlantic you will experience the thrill of descending the cliff face to sea-level where the fun isn’t over!

Participants will then have to tackle a little rock climbing for their journey back to land. Hopefully, if not away on tour, Alan will be there to give the cliffs a go!

Sadly, every five minutes someone in the UK dies without the care they need at the end of their life. 

Taking part in events like the Ramore Head Abseil enables Marie Curie to reach many more patients and their families.

So why not face down the Portrush cliffs and help Marie Curie Nurses to continue caring for people with cancer and other terminal illnesses.

Please note that participants must be aged 14 years or over and weigh under 17 stone. Anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Places are limited

In Northern Ireland Marie Curie Cancer Care needs £6.5m overall to run its services.

£3.5m is needed for Hospice and Day Therapies with £2.1m coming from fundraising.

Another £3m is needed for the charity’s Nursing Service and £1.5m or this total comes from fundraising.

Barbara Dempsey - a well known Portstewart businesswoman and former councillor - has a great local committee working for the charity so it’s hoped the community will come out in force and support the abseil fundraiser this September.
