Good progress being made on A26 dualling scheme

The eight kilometre dual carriageway scheme will consist of a new roundabout at the A44 Drones Road junction, as well as a number of flyover junctions along the route.

Transport Minister, Michelle McIlveen, who visited the scheme to view the works said: “The project represents a significant £55million investment by the Northern Ireland Executive in the roads infrastructure in the area and provides a welcome boost for the local construction industry.

“Once completed this scheme will help improve road safety, reduce congestion and improve journey times for the 18,000 vehicles which travel it every day for tourism and work.

“I have been really impressed by the sheer scale of this project and how it has been managed on the ground. Good progress is being made on the scheme and it is on schedule to be completed in summer 2017.”

So far, around one million tonnes of earth has been moved, whilst the realignment of a section of the River Clough and the demolition of the Crankhill bridge have also been completed. Three culverts have also been installed and work is currently progressing on the construction of three new bridges along the scheme.
