Good show at the Moonlight Walk

PONCHOS, brollies and wellies were out in force last Friday for Action Cancer’s 10 mile Moonlight Walk.

Despite the poor weather nearly 900 men and women turned out, most dressed in top-to-toe pink with tutus, feather boas and wigs.

Spirits were high and bodies were limber following a Zumba warm up before walkers were counted down by Cool FM DJ, Pete Snodden. The route followed the Malone Road to the halfway point City Hall before returning to the Cooke Rugby Club via the Lisburn Road.

Dougie King, Head of Fundraising and Communications for Action Cancer said:

“To date the annual MoonLight Walk has raised a staggering £500,000 towards the charity’s breast screening services, the only one of its kind in Northern Ireland. Action Cancer detects an average of six cancers for every 1,000 screenings that we carry out.

“If this year’s MoonLight Walk fundraising total reaches the anticipated £100,000, this means 1,250 local women will benefit from a free mammogram at Action Cancer. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this happen.”

Action Cancer offers breast screening to local women in their 40s and over 70 who fall outside the NHS age range. There are over 1,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer here every year and on average 300 women die from it annually.
