GP raises funds for the RNLI

Portrush volunteer Lifeboat crew got a lovely surprise when local GP Martin O’Kane dropped in on an exercise session. Martin who lives in Portrush

called in on the crew as they were returning for their usual Saturday morning exercise to handover a cheque for £350.

Martin had the idea for a fundraiser when he was organising his birthday party at home. He asked the station for a lifeboat bucket and during the

celebrations, he was able to persuade his friends to empty their pockets into the bucket.

Martin said: “To be honest didn’t have to use too much persuasion. People who live around the coast here in Portrush are very aware of the volunteer crew and the work they do in all weathers to save lives at sea.”

Robin Cardwell Lifeboat Operations Manager added: “Every penny counts to the RNLI in order to maintain our two Lifeboats in Portrush and to train and equip our crew to the highest standards. We are indebted to people like Martin who fundraise for us, because without our fundraisers we couldn’t do what we do.”

After the exercise, the crew took Martin onto the lifeboat to meet other crewmembers and get a picture taken to thank him for his generous donation.
