GPP hosts event to discuss ILEX regeneration

LAST night, Wednesday, September 7, up to 100 key community workers and educationalists met at the former Ebrington Barracks to discuss the current regeneration plans for the City.

They attended as guests of the group Gateway to Protestant Participation, which is a programme funded through SEUPB Peace III through the NW Peace III cluster.

The GPP was specifically set up to increase the capacity within the Protestant community to develop and make strategic decisions on the best way forward for their community in general and citywide.

The GPP has been supported by regeneration group ILEX within future planning, and tonight's networking event will focus on the detail contained within the regeneration plans for the City.

Co-ordinator with the GPP, Willie Lamrock, said: "A considerable amount of work from all communities has been put into developing the plan, which is now at its final stage.

"The Protestant community as a minority within the city has found it difficult to fully engage in the process and this is an excellent opportunity to set out the proposals for the regeneration of the city. The GPP invited along community leaders, educationalists, loyal orders, bands and youth groups to the event for an up-to-date presentation on the regeneration plans from representatives of ILEX.

Asked what he hoped people would gain from the event, Mr Lamrock said: "I am hoping, in fact, I know that there will be a better informed community who will be able to take on board some of the decisions that have been arrived at, some of the proposals that are being developed.

"There is still a short window open through the consultation process to register ideas or put forward sugestions."

Mr Lamrock said the group had received many positive returns from "a wide range of people with a genuine interest in the city".

With 100 invites sent out to key community leaders and groups, Mr Lamrock said he wanted to appeal for anyone who wanted knowledge or sight of the regeneration proposals and plans to attend the event.
