Grace McNeill, who was diagnosed in April last year, spoke of the “amazing” support she has received from her friends and family in the wake of the devastating news.

And the mother-of-three told the Times she determined to beat the disease and return to work as a carer in the community.

“It was a big shock when I was told I had cancer,as it is one of those things you think is never going to happen to you”, she added.

“I had no symptoms and didn’t feel unwell; I just went along for a routine check and that was when I found out. That is why it is so important that women go and get themselves checked regularly.

“I am getting ready to go in for an operation and then radiotherapy, but I feel healthy and strong and I believe I will beat this. I have not let it get me down.”

Grace, who recently celebrated her 51st birthday, has made it her mission to raise much-needed funds for local charity Cancer Focus NI and has taken part in a sponsored walk across 10 towns over a two-day period, included Larne, Ballyclare, Carrickfergus, Glengormley, Saintfield, Holywood, Bangor, Donaghadee, Comber and Newtownards.

“I have been overwhelmed by the support I have received from my friends, family and local businesses. People have really pulled together to help me.

“I also want to say thanks to Pastor Terry Fittis and his wife Sandra of Larne Elim Church for all their support,” Grace concluded.

Anyone who would like to donate to Grace’s cause can make a contribution to the Cancer Focus NI collection boxes located at A Flower Lady (Main Street, Larne), Harmony Therapies (Old Glenarm Road, Larne) and the A8 Diner (Belfast Road, Larne).
