Graham’s Kennels take over Coleraine Borough Council contract

SINCE January 60 unwanted dogs picked up by Coleraine Borough Council dog wardens have been rehomed from Graham’s Kennels in Articlave.

The Artivclave kennels have the contract to house any stray or unwanted dogs collected by the dog wardens.

Figures show that since the start of 2011, 27 dogs were returned directly to their owners while 32 were collected from the kennels by the owner.

Since taking over the Council contract last July, dog-lover Margaret Graham has taken it upon herself to re-home dogs that are not claimed by owners.

And Margaret is keen to point out the good work of the local dog wardens.

“Many people have this impression that if a dog is taken in by the dog wardens it is put to sleep, but that is never the case unless they are ill.

“If a dog is not claimed by its owner within six days, we keep the dogs on for re-homing.”

Margaret has taken on the re-homing role at her own expense, and she says that donations are always welcomed.

“We had a nice donation from the Fire Service earlier this month and this money will be used to re-home dogs that are unwanted.

“At the minute I only have four dogs for re-homing, but not so long ago I had 14, and that was really hard work, so any little help is very much appreciated,” said Margaret.

If you are interested in re-homing any of the dogs in this feature, contact Margaret on (028) 70848011 or call at the kennels. Margaret will be happy to accommodate you.
