The year 11 technology and design students have been taking part in the F1 CAD/CAM STEM schools challenge.

After working towards the competition for just seven weeks, they came second in in the regional finals which took place in Newry last week.

Teams are required to design, construct and race the fastest Formula One style cars powered by compressed air cylinders.

They must design model F1 cars of the future to specifications set by the International Rules Committee Team.

Two teams from Carrick Grammar took part. Team Dauntless, made up of Antoni Furman, Rebekah Robinson, Jade McGrath and Louise Hogg, designed a car that covered the 25 metre track in a very competitive time of 1.272 seconds and was placed second in the overall rankings.

Eloquent Spin consisting of Jazmine Evangelista-McShane, Lucy McCrea, Rae Branagh and Stephanie Lindsay produced a quick race track time of 1.257 seconds and took home the Team Identity award for their efforts.

Team Dauntless will now work collaboratively with another school, potentially from Germany, England or America, and compete in the World Finals in Malaysia in October 2017.

The world record of 0.916 seconds was set last year by a team from Australia.
