Grand Master to launch book recalling history of local Lodges

THE history of the Lower Iveagh District Lodge LOL No 1 will be recalled in a new book entitled ‘Lower Iveagh District LOL No 1 - Lodges, History, Halls, Brethren, Banners and Bands’, which will be launched by the Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland Edward Stevenson in Carnew Orange Hall next Tuesday February 22 at 7.30pm.

The book is part of a project which the District Lodge has been engaged in to encourage greater understanding of the Orange Tradition within the wider community of Lower Iveagh.

Edited by Lisburn man, Bro John Kelly, a member of Quilly LOL 442, the book gives a brief history of each of the 23 Lodges in Lower Iveagh District and features over 500 photographs showing the Orange halls, banners, lodge members and bands past and present. It also includes a snapshot review of some of the many events held thought the District during the past few years.

Sections entitled ‘Lower Iveagh Orangeism in Context’ by Worshipful Bro Drew Nelson (Secretary, Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland) and ‘A Brief Chronology of Lower Iveagh District Loyal Orange Lodge’ by Grand Lodge archivist, Worshipful Bro Dr Jonathan Mattison (Past District Master) adds a more detailed historical overview of the Lower Iveagh District.

Also included is a section entitled ‘War Years Remembered’ by Bro Scott Carson (Chaplain of Dromara LOL No 12), which is written in memory of all Brethren from the District who served and those who laid down their lives in armed conflicts.

During the evening, guest speaker Bro Dr David Hume (Director of Services, Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland) will give a talk entitled ‘History of Brotherhoods in Ireland’ and Lisburn’s talented singer songwriter Noel McMaster of Bakerloo Junction will entertain the audience with a selection of his well-known songs.

The office bearers of Lower Iveagh District LOL No 1 extend an open invitation to attend the book launch which will be followed by light refreshments providing the opportunity to meet the new Grand Master and get a signed copy of the book.
