Great library figuresmembership

LONDONDERRY book-lovers last year made up the second largest membership of any library in Northern Ireland with 10,589 active members at the city’s central library in Foyle Street.

Only Dungannon library had a higher membership in 2010/11 with 11,824 members. According to figures released by Culture Minister Carol Ní Chuilín the Central Library here attracted 354,224 visits over last year and had a total staff rota of 535.50 hours per week.

The total library membership in the North West - including Waterside, Strathfoyle, Shantallow, Limavady, Dungiven and Strabane - was 29,835.

The Minister explained that active Members were “defined as members who initially joined a particular library but may then have borrowed items from, or used computers in, any library location during the year in question.”

She advised Londonderry’s Central Library attracted 354,224 visits last year. Strabane attracted 100,622 visits; Limavady 99,160 visits; Waterside 73,850 visits; Shantallow 61,977 visits; Strathfoyle 40,192 visits; and Dungiven 20,329 visits.
