Great War exhibition tells of local heroes

We Will Remember Them, a touring living history project, went on view for the first time at Greenland Community Centre.

The 10-month Community Support and Development Partnership (CSDP) project received a grant of £33,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, to enable local communities across Larne, Carrickfergus and Newtownabbey to research their cultural heritage during the First World War period, 1912-1921.

We Will Remember Them is supported by the Mid Antrim Museums Service, which showcased the exhibition in Larne, Carrickfergus and Rathcoole last week.

It went on more permanent display at the Carrickfergus Museum and Civic Centre on Friday past and will remain there until April 13, transferring to Larne Library (April 13-27) in conjunction with Larne Borough Council, and finally at the museum at Mossley Mill (April 27 – May 11).

Jayne Clarke, curator of the Mid-Antrim Museums Service, said the “worthwhile” project had “fostered social history research skills within communities in Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey”.

She added: “Actively understanding historical events in east and mid-Antrim linked to the First World War, and finding out more about local individuals who played a part in them, is a valuable contribution to a community’s self esteem.”
