'˜Greater Love' production with the New Irish Choir

On July 1, 1916 thousands of young men, threw themselves over the top of trenches, and walked toward a frontline in one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War.

For all the provinces of Ireland, but particularly Ulster, it would be weeks later that the totality of loss was felt in towns and villages. 

‘The War to end all Wars’ did not end at The Somme, but a cruel slaughter continued at places like Ypres and Cambrai just as it had done at Verdun and Gallipoli. 

Shankill Parish Church feel that it is important to hold a community event that would help everyone to appreciate the context of the First World War and its Centenary, and they feel there is no better way than through a sensitive production called ‘Greater Love’.

The New Irish Choir and Orchestra are performing Greater Love on June 25, at Shankill Parish. They look back through the eyes of those who went from these shores to serve, and the eyes of those left behind. Through letters and diaries, the lives of these young men and women unfold surrounded by the music of the era.
