Greatest playwright of recent times, Brian Friel, has died

Brian Friel, regarded by many as the greatest playwright of recent times, has died aged 86.

Best known for his plays ‘Philadelphia, Here I Come,’ ‘Faith Healer,’ ‘Translations’ and ‘Dancing at Lughnasa,’ Mr Friel passed away peacefully at his Greencastle home on Friday morning (October 2) in the company of his wife and daughters.

Friel, who was born in Killyclogher in 1929, moved to Londonderry at the aged of ten.

He was educated at St Columb’s College.
