Green Flag award for Belmont House

Pupils and teachers at Belmont House Special School are celebrating after receiving the internationally recognised Eco-Schools ‘Green Flag’.

The Eco-Schools programme, which is run by Tidy NI and supported by Airtricity, encourages pupils and teachers to address a variety of environmental topics, ranging from energy to bio-diversity, with schools being awarded the ‘Green Flag’ for excellence in achieving their goals.

The Londonderry primary school is one of over 220 schools currently taking part in Airtricity’s Operation Energy programme, and one of 162 current Green Flag schools from across Northern Ireland.

Eco-Schools Coordinator at the school, Julie McDevitt said: “We are delighted to have achieved this very prestigious ‘Green Flag’ award in recognition of all the wonderful projects the children are currently working on. We hope to grow from strength to strength in our efforts to educate the children in all the issues that will make a difference in improving our environment”.

Eco-Schools Manager, Carmel Fyfe, said: “We are providing practical help to schools as they learn more about energy and progress with their Eco-Schools Programme. It is wonderful to see schools like Belmont House Special School getting involved and making real efforts to save energy, money and the environment. All the staff and pupils at the school can be proud of their efforts.’

The sustainable schools programme encourages pupils and teachers to address a variety of environmental topics, ranging from energy to bio-diversity, with schools being awarded the prestigious ‘Green Flag’ for excellence in achieving their environmental goals.

Since launching into the classroom in 1994, the Eco-Schools programme has developed into one of the most popular school activities for teachers and pupils alike, with over 900 of Northern Ireland’s schools currently registered to participate. It’s estimated that over 240,000 pupils and 14,500 teachers participate in the programme on an annual basis.
