Green flag awards given to schools for environment work

Flying the Green Flag signifies that environmental awareness and action are an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of the school.

The successful schools were: Drumcree College, Millington Primary, and Moyallon Primary in Portadown and Drumgor Primary, Craigavon; St Mary’s, Derrytrasna along with Drumnamoe Nursery and St Francis’ Primary in Lurgan.

Recognising the achievement, Lord Mayor of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Councillor Darryn Causby said, “Congratulations to the seven schools in the Craigavon, Lurgan and Portadown areas which have been awarded the Green Flag. This is a fantastic achievement and I hope this will encourage other schools to go for the award too!”

Schools are audited and go through a process of inspection for bronze and silver level before reaching the top level of Green Flag. For any school interested in completing the award, help is available from the council.

The Eco-Schools programme provides an ideal way for fostering environmental awareness in the entire school in a way that links to many curriculum subjects.

The primary aim regarding the Eco-Schools scheme is to combine learning and action for the improvement of the environmental performance of Eco-Schools.
