Green light for centre facelift

Last Monday night’s Economic Growth & Development meeting heard that general refurbishment, at a cost of £130,000, would bring the much used community premises up to an acceptable standard, allow them to be used more fully and improve the visual amenity of the area.

The remaining cost would involve a rear extension to provide additional storage, new suspended ceilings throughout the centre (except in the main hall), a replacement boiler and replacement kitchen.

Councillors were also informed that the refurbishment would be carried out in-house by Council’s Building Maintenance Unit in conjunction with their tendered external contractors and that the total cost of the works had been budgeted for within the current year’s capital projects schemes.

Proposing that Council go ahead with the Kells scheme, Cllr Hubert Nicholl said it was “15 years overdue”, adding: “the community have been waiting for this for a long, long time”.

He was seconded by Cllr William McCaughey and his remarks were also supported by Cllr Robin Cherry.
