Dunmurry Community Association and local politicians have welcomed the announcement by DRD Minister Danny Kennedy that a right-turn filter light in Dunmurry village, leading on to Dunmurry Lane has finally been given the green light from the Roads Service.

Local MLA Jonathan Craig, who received confirmation from the Minister’s office this week, told the Star: “This has been a long running campaign to have this junction upgraded, with many meetings with Roads Service, which culminated with an on-site meeting with the Roads Minister, where he saw first-hand the dangers of this junction.

“It was very clear from the outset of the meeting, that the Minister shared many of the concerns of the local community and as a result of the meeting, he has now instructed the Roads Service to carry out much needed work to this junction.”

Mr Craig added: “I would like to thank the Dunmurry Community Association and local residents for the very effective campaign that they have fought.

“I know that when the upgrades are carried out, this will reduce the amount of traffic using Ulster Avenue and Church Avenue, which has been a major concern for local residents.

“I would also like to publicly thank the Minister for attending the meeting which has now concluded with agreement by the Road Service to carry out this much needed work.”

Local community worker Billy Thompson expressed his delight at the move.

He said: “On behalf of Dunmurry Community Association and local residents living in Dunmurry Village, I would like to thank Jonathan and Margaret for all their help and advice over our long battle to have a filter lane heading onto Dunmurry Lane installed.”

The Mayor of Lisburn and Local Councillor Margaret Tolerton said provision of the filter light was long overdue.

She said: “The announcement by the DRD Minister will be welcomed by local residents and the many motorists that use this very busy junction.
