Green light for Hillsborough Road development

DESPITE strong local opposition, the Planning Service has given the go ahead for a controversial new residential development on the Hillsborough Road in Lisburn.

Since 2008 CT Developments Ltd have been seeking planning permission to demolish derelict houses at 111-115 Hillsborough Road with the intention of building apartments on the site.

However, local residents were fiercely opposed to the scheme, which they said would result in the over-development of the site.

113 letters of objection were lodged with the Planning Service opposing the application, as well as two petitions with hundreds of signatures.

The application for thirteen apartments, together with associated carparking, amenity space and landscaping was given the green light by the Planners after amended plans, which included changes to the streetscape and side elevation, were submitted by the developers.

At a recent meeting of Lisburn City Council’s Planning Committee, Alderman Paul Givan said residents were “very unhappy about the development” and asked for a further meeting to be held to discuss the proposal before it was allowed to proceed.

However, the Senior Planning Officer said the application had been “gone through a number of times” and that senior planning officers had visited the site.

“We have given this the fullest consideration and feel it should be approved,” he said.

Alderman Paul Porter added that “residents are supportive of sensible development of the site but this over-development is regrettable.”
