Green light for Whiteabbey resurfacing work

During a meeting with councillors at Mossley Mill last week, Divisional Roads Manager Kevin Monaghan said that the long-awaited road improvements will commence next year.

Cllr Campbell, who lives not far from the village, welcomed the move to bring the road “up to an acceptable standard”.

“The problem in the area is that the road surface is in a very poor state of repair and patched and uneven. One of the reasons for the delay in planned road resurfacing was that Northern Ireland Water had plans to carry out works. These plans were postponed and have now been postponed further, until at least 2015,” he explained.

“It would have been unacceptable for local residents in Whiteabbey to have to wait an indefinite period to have a proper roads resurfacing scheme carried out. I welcome the fact that Roads Service officials have now agreed to change their mind about postponing works until after the water works have been completed. This is a pragmatic and sensible decision.”

Cllr Campbell, who raised concerns at the meeting about NI Water potentially moving in and digging up the newly laid road surface, welcomed assurances from Mr Monaghan that in the event of any work, NI Water would be required to reinstate the road surface to an acceptable standard.

“I welcome the decision to carry out these essential roads works and understand that works will be carried out in the near future,” he added.
