Green light is given for a new shared community space

The green light has been given for a new £300,000 shared community space near Black’s Road.

The Planning Service granted permission for a scheme by Groundwork and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency to redevelop a section of derelict land between Garnock Hill and Arlington Drive.

The scheme includes plans for a wildflower meadow, artwork, viewing platforms and interpretive signage.

Two letters of objection opposing the scheme were lodged with the Planning Service.

However, the development was still given the go ahead at a meeting of Lisburn City Council’s Planning Committee on Monday (February 3).

Richard Rogers, Head of Programmes and Technical Services at Groundwork Northern Ireland, said; “Sharing Our Space is a three year, European Union PEACE III funded regional regeneration and peace building initiative.

“As part of the programme, Groundwork Northern Ireland will be arranging improvements to a derelict site on Belfast’s Black’s Road aimed at returning it to productive use for the benefit of the community.

“Currently, this work includes some landscaping, with paths, and the introduction of a brand new wildflower meadow for people in the area to enjoy.

“The total investment will amount to around £300,000, so it is a substantial project,” he continued.

“Local representatives have been fully engaged in the initiative and community outreach to discuss the improvement plans is about to commence.”

The plans for the development also include footpaths, metal and timber fencing, steps, car park, seating and bins, two footbridges, lighting, trees and shrub planting.
