The 1st Greenisland Brownies is one of 100 Girlguiding groups across the UK taking part in the unique challenge which aims to celebrate the positive difference they make in their community.

Girls have been busy putting the finishing touches to a colourful ‘spot’ which will adorn the enormous cape – predicted to measure a record-breaking 44 metres long.

The finished cape, decorated with 100 spots created by Girlguiding groups across the UK, will be unveiled live on Blue Peter at 5pm today (Thursday) to mark Children in Need.

Girls from 1st Greenisland Brownies decided to decorate their spot with examples of the inspiring community work they have led.

These include fundraising the NICRC, a local charity that helps those affected by cancer, and helping out at a local food bank.

Grace, who is a member of 1st Greenisland Brownies, said: “Blue Peter is a brilliant show – we can’t wait to get our spot done and hopefully see it on TV!”

Catherine Murphy, the group’s leader, said: “It’s been great to see how the money we’ve raised for NICRC has contributed to the charity’s work.

“The girls have loved doing all the fundraising activities, including walks, parents nights and games.”

The Blue Peter superhero challenges comes just ahead of the second anniversary of #iwill, a national campaign which Girlguiding is part of that aims to make social action part of life for as many 10 to 20 year-olds as possible by the year 2020.

Girlguiding will be marking #iwill week on November 23.
