Greenlight Gateway goes global in its charity outlook

The organisation volunteered their services to a school-building initiative when they heard about great work undertaken by Mellon Educate in townships throughout South Africa.

Cathal O’Connell, along with several hundred other volunteers, has travelled to South Africa on numerous occasions to build schools that help to empower the next generation of entire communities to use education as a tool to lift themselves out of poverty.

Adrian Winchborne, General Manager of Greenlight Gateway said: “When we heard about the great work undertaken by Cathal through Mellon Educate in townships throughout South Africa, we knew this was something we wanted to be involved with.

“This is not the type of project we would normally run but part of the aim of our organisation is to create new opportunities to enable our members to develop their skills, talents and self-confidence. What could be a better opportunity than this?”

The project, under the direction of Marie Birtis, is based on a closed ticket raffle and aims to raise £2,000 in total. From this, a £1,000 donation will go towards Cathal’s work with Mellon Educate and the other £1,000 will go to the winner.

Niall Mellon, founder of Mellon Educate, thanked Greenlight Gateway Ballycastle for their selfless support with this project.

“To date, this charity has built 25,000 homes, housing 125,000 impoverished South Africans,” he said.

“Now our aim is to provide educational improvements for 100,000 of Africa’s children. Organisations like Greenlight Gateway which lend a hand to our volunteers in their fundraising efforts play a huge part in the growth of the charity and assists the charity in achieving its goals.”
