Gridiron rivalry is set aside on Super Sunday

American football fans in Carrickfergus joined in the excitement and drama of Super Bowl Sunday.

Member of the Carrickfergus Knights team attended a party hosted by the Belfast Trojans, at Madison’s Hotel in Belfast.

They saw the New England Patriots beat last year’s champions, the Seattle Seahawks, 28 – 24, at the University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, Arizona.

Super Bowl Sunday is one of the biggest days of the US sporting calendar, but the game also makes sporting headlines around the world, watched and enjoyed by millions.

In Northern Ireland, the Trojans’ annual get together, sponsored by Budweiser, for the game has become something of an institution too.

Barry Keil, Chairman of the Belfast Trojans, said; “The evening was a chance for American Football fans to meet the team and watch the Super Bowl live, in the company of like-minded fans.

“It was an incredible evening with an electric atmosphere and a great sense of fun. It’s always a sell-out too, so anyone who wants to be part of the event next year is urged to book early.

“With the help of other local teams, Belfast Trojans are building on the interest which the Super Bowl creates each year. We’re delighted to see that others have followed our lead and there were parties of all sizes springing up around the country as people got together to watch the game.”

NFL games featured on the big screen when Carrickfergus Knights held their annual Thanksgiving dinner in the borough in November.

Again rivalry was left on the gridiron with the Knights inviting the Trojans to their traditional celebration, complete with turkey and pumpkin pie.
